Animation has evolved alongside technology. With each evolution, a new approach to animation emerges. Your camper will learn various animation skills and create a short animation that adheres to industry standards. They’ll come out of the workshop learning the principles of animation needed to bring any character to life.

Stop Motion Animation

Campers will team up and learn how to create a stop motion animation. Each team is going to write a script and create an animation with provided materials.

Software: N/A
Hardware: Camera, tripod, materials (model in clay, etc.)
Result: Stop motion animation based on their script.

From Theory to Practice

Let’s get acquainted with animation theory — basics of timing and spacing, analyzing what makes a scene, etc. Each day campers will focus on a different essential aspect of animation. Campers will complete short animation exercises to reinforce the lectures.

Software: Toon Boom Harmony
Hardware: Wacom Tablets, A4 paper, pencils
Result: 3 short animation exercises — a ball bouncing in place, character expressions and exaggeration, building a shot + creating and traditionally animating a character.

Clay Animation

Sculpt a character from clay and animate it! Do you know how? By shooting it after every slight movement.

Software: Stop motion studio (free app for mobiles)
Hardware: Mobile phones, modeling clay
Result: Short animation of clay characters in a real, everyday environment.

Lyp-syncing and Voice-acting

Have you ever created your own character faces? Let’s record a phrase or a piece of dialogue — and using a reference guide of already made lip-sync templates — animate our character’s face. We will learn how to use the principles of appeal and exaggeration when animating facial expressions.

Software: Toon Boom Harmony
Hardware: Wacom Tablets, zoom recorder
Result: Fully animated character faces with spoken word or other audio.

Animating Cut Out Style

Time to design a character and create a cut out style animation.

Software: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects
Hardware: Wacom Tablets
Result: Short animations with original characters.

Transformation

Transform into an object — or anything you would like — by creating a character that captures you.

Software: Toon Boom Harmony
Hardware: Wacom Tablets, pencils, erasers, A4 paper
Result: A GIF that characterizes the camper.
